Back in the day, Canal workers got paid differently depending on color and place of hire. Most whites were paid in gold. Others were paid in silver. Often it was different pay for the same work. We may look at it in disgust but in most of the world this is still going on with the difference being men vs women or American worker vs Asian worker.
